A NEW YEAR, A NEW BEGINNING:

Last year,  I believe,  I wrote my first article of 2018 on new year’s resolutions---informing you all on how to make resolutions, maintain them and finally achieve them.  However, this year, I’m going to tell you all about GOALS:   short-term and long term goals.  But first let’s  define the word: resolution.  “Resolution:  a firm decision to do or not to do something.   Goal:  the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result:

  1.  Goals should not be rigid.
  2. Goals provide a direction to follow to achieve desired outcome
  3. Goals involve intention setting, planning, preparing, and taking REALISTIC action.”

(Quoted from:  National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA  Blog:  Melissa Brode)

My decision to write on this topic of goals stemmed from my son asking me:  “Mom, did you make your new’s years resolutions?  My reply:  Nope, I don’t plan to for this year because for me-- It really makes no sense at all--- I seem to give up on all my resolutions after a couple of months or less.    I prefer to set sort-term and long-term goals instead.  Why?  It is not because I have been a Realtor for many years and been in outside sales for many years also.  But because, I feel and truly believe that goals are much more achievable.

I always write them down on paper and make two(2)  categories:  short-term goals (you can set what ever time frame you desire)  However, for long-term goals:  a longer time period is necessary to achieve them.  Goals are the best way to look at your current life and decide what exactly you want to change or improve and achieve.  This setting of goals applies not only to your personal  desires such as:  wanting to lose some weight, eating more healthy, starting an exercise program, etc.  But It applies and includes all of your ambition, dreams  applied to your life.  You can definitely use goals in your current job:  to improve your job performance, to aspire to get a promotion or a better paying job, etc.

Here are some of my own personal tips on goal setting:

Always write them down on paper.  Divide them into two(2) categories:  short-term goals and long-term goals.  You might want to do this with purchasing  an inexpensive tablet.  Periodically, check your journal to see if you had accomplished any of your goals or how you are progressing with them.  When I achieve any of my short-term goals, I write them down:  listing the time it took me to achieve them.  This way it allows you to “set the bar higher” the next time and to be able to see your accomplishments, which will give you more incentive to do more goals.

Never ever get discouraged if you fail to achieve any of your goals.   In order to avoid discouragement,  I suggest you keep a journal daily on how you are progressing.

Goal setting should be on everyone’s agenda.  Why?  It gives us a hope, a sense of pride  and a feeling of great accomplishment  and an  improved self-esteem, which will give us a desire  to improve more  and  pushes us to do more.   Everyone needs a dream.    I saw a very popular movie once, “Pretty Woman”  where at the end of the movie, a character says:  “Everyone has a dream. What’s  your dream?”

“Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” – Harriet Tubman

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”  --Eleanor Roosevelt

“Everyone has a dream deep in their heart, which is a center of what they want to do.  If they had all the money, and they had the time and they were guaranteed that they’d be successful, that dream is what they would love to do.” – Bruce Wilkinson

I, personally  believe that dreams are attainable by setting goals.  Never chase after monies, but instead do what you love.  What is your passion?  What are you passionate about in life?  Try to pursue your passion and I guarantee you the monies will always follow.   Life is so short and no one knows when we will die or how we will die, but God knows.  So live your life with passion and a zest and set your goals and achieve them; and set more goals.

Hope all this information is helpful and you will all take action to try setting goals instead of new year’s resolutions, which for most of us will be given up on in a short period of time without accomplishing what we had set out to accomplish.    Try goal setting, you have nothing to lose but  to gain new insights and possibly a new beginning in this brand new year!  Happy Blessed New Year of 2019 to all  of you!!
